@jademoon7938

They cared that Kim Kardashian was calling her underwear company Kimono AND TRYING TO TRADEMARK IT. That’s the only time the Japanese people got upset and it had nothing to do with wearing kimono.

@abigailhughes5897

some people really need to learn the difference between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation.

@StrongBlenderMan

It isn't about who's wearing,it's about wearing it properly.

@9elypses

My aunt Yuko, upon marrying into our family, has tried to dress every girl in our family in her kimonos 😂 I'm 30 now and she still asks me to play dress up when I visit. When she takes her sons and daughter back home for visits they all come back with new custom kimonos from family there. Aunt Yuko said if I go visit she wants to take me shopping and to a summer festival. Japanese are really really happy to share their culture and its so pretty. To not participate would be so sad.

@BaiXue27

I'm chinese & a cosplayer living in europe
so many of my white friends wear hanfu, qipao & kimono for fun & for cosplay and i think it's beautiful that my culture has survived 1000s of years to be enjoyed by everyone
good on japanese people for not bending to western criticism

@TeamQuigley

Cultural appropriation is kinda only a thing in America. Pretty much everywhere else it’s considered cultural appreciation.

@Maiishus

kimono renting is quite literally a tourist attraction/activity... targeted to foreigners...
this is so ridiculous can people stop complaining and let the people from the actual country get mad 😭😭

@MatthewBJ

I hope this trend of Getting upset FOR PEOPLE, without asking them first, ends soon. I never saw this as racist or anything, if someone is wearing a kimono, it's because they clearly love the culture, and style? how is showing your love for something a bad thing now? - it happends to me alot too, as a gay guy, so many of my girlfriends will get offended FOR ME, but honestly very little offends me, i understand everyone is raised differently, taught different things, have different religious views, and i'm okay with that, everyone is free to have their own thoughts and opinions on things. if we stop getting offended, and accusing people of things, and just get to know them, most people are nice and will treat you kindly.

@willowbirchmeier1039

Japanese people are very proud of their culture, Kimonos are a common gift given to foreign visitors.

@Zolia

“westerns were outraged while the japanese remained supportive” then there’s nothing wrong and you shame those westerners that outraged

@DannyJane.

I spent a glorious day in Kyoto dressed in full kimono. All I got from the Japanese were smiles of delight and requests to take pictures. They complimented the colors of my kimono and obi, chatted with me in broken English or happy Japanese (which I didn't understand, but smiles are international). Japan has a very absorbent culture. Their attitude is if they like it they will adopt it. That extends to foreigners who absorb their cultures too. It's their way of saying, "Thank you for appreciating something we greatly value. Please use it any way you need or like and make us a part of your life too!"

@nahos1100

I hate when people defend a culture THEY ARE NOT A PART OF!! Turns out most of the time people like to share their culture and dont need some third party to "protect" it

@Zer0ThePlagueDoc

The Japanese family I know asked me about this, and why is offended Americans. They thought it was being seen as inappropriate, but were just happy people loved their culture's dress and style. Trying to explain to them people just wanted to be offended to feel self-righteous and good about themselves dumbfounded them.

@masdyrenee1328

I think a lot of people don't realize that "traditional clothing" is just historical clothing. Like Japanese people probably see it the same way as Westerners would see someone dressed in a bustled Edwardian skirt: they're just clothes. Sure, there are ceremonial kimonos, but the outfits people are actually wearing aren't really that special. They are just wearing clothes people used to wear every day.

@jandelmarcantos

Many people being offended for others not asking the others if they are offended now im offended of these offenders being offending😂

@SunsetAllu

EXACTLY, Ive been waiting so long for more people to talk about this

@lenab184

Omg, that is so relatable. I love Hanfu (Chinese, but often the same thing happens) and the traditional and cultural aspect behind it. I was only weirdly addressed by westerners, a Chinese person never said it’s weird, I was mostly treated neutrally or once complimented 😂

@mattan.creates

In my opinion, let's not say Western. Let's say Americans😂 because bon blacks were dreads and braids in Jamaica. No one bats an eye.

@antoniakilby3763

I have worked in many different cultural restaurants. The first one required wearing kimono. I took a look at the uniform they had and asked if I could wear my own. The owners agreed and I would come in about 20 minutes before shift to put mine on. Served many businessmen from Japan and only received compliments. A few years later I went to work in a Indian restaurant and the owner was absolutely thrilled that I owned my own saris. Again, no one from India ever complained about me wearing a sari. One older gentleman told me I wore my sari like his mother did. Probably the best compliment I received. I do not see any problem wearing other cultures clothing as long as it's done with respect. When I see women dressed up as geisha wearing a mini kimono that barely covers their butts with white makeup smeared all over their face. Without them actually trying to reproduce traditional geisha makeup. I find it inappropriate and an insult to women who spend years honing their arts. Only to become a offensive hypersexualizedo caricature.

@FIERYPEGASUS

THATS WHAT I BEEN SAYING BUT THEN SUDDENLY IM THE RACIST ONE
