I have NO idea in which fantasy world "the sound of silence" sung by S&G is less famous than any of its covers
Tracy Chapman. The depth, the pain, the honesty in her voice can't be surpassed ever.
Roberta Flack's version of "Killing me softly" is timeless and hypnotic.
A few good ones here, but in what world have Simon & Garfunkel’s Sound of Silence and Tracy Chapman’s Fast Car been topped by anyone?
More popular than the original? Sound of Silence? Fast Car? No way
I don't think Luke Combs cover is more popular than Tracy's
I agree with most of these, but Tracy Chapman’s “Fast Car” can never be topped.
Trent Reznor originally was NOT happy that anyone would touch “Hurt” a deeply personal song for him. But after hearing Cash’s version Trent admitted, “that’s not my song anymore, it belongs to him.”
The Pet Shop Boys' covers of Go West and Always On My Mind turned out to be more popular than the originals, at least in the UK and Europe.
Fun fact, in an interview Dolly Parton said she was so pleasantly surprised and touched by Whitney's version that she almost had a car crash when she heard it on the radio!
"More popular" doesn't necessarily mean "better".
This is first time I've heard about Lori Leiberman not being included in song writing credits for Killing Me Softly. Egregious treatment of an artist.
Cash's version of "Ring of Fire" is so iconic that most people don't even realize it is a cover.
I cry every time I watch the Cash version of hurt. It's just so raw and honest. Just beautiful. I love the NIN original very much too. That's my late teens and holds a special place in my heart ❤️
🤔 Tracy’s version is THEE version
I would have nominated Israel Kamakawiwoʻole’s “Over the Rainbow/What a Wonderful World” for at least an honorable mention. It brought new life to both songs in his own way and helped highlight island music in the process.
I will always love Leonard Cohen's version, but Jeff Buckley's was out of this world! i still can not hear him sing it without tears.
I can't watch Joe Cocker perform without immediately picturing John Belushi imitating him in that SNL skit from the 70's.
A couple of oldies worth mentioning: Peter, Paul and Mary's cover of Leaving on a Jet Plane, a John Denver song Patsy Cline's cover of Crazy, a song by Willie Nelson
